Katya and Garrett’s story began when they were both attending college in Chapel Hill. Garrett was the manager of the UNC women’s basketball team and Katya was a nerdy biology major. The pair quickly fell madly in love with each other, despite being so opposite. Shortly after college, they continued their relationship through a long distance phase. While Katya stayed in Chapel Hill to finish dental school, Garrett began his career in Charlotte.
The couple’s proposal story is absolutely adorable. It all started when they were ‘supposed’ to just be going to a tailgate for an NC State game. Katya was confused as to why Garrett parked his car so far away from the tailgate. He claimed they needed to take their fur child, Sully, on a walk so he would not be so hyper at the tailgate. Little did Katya know, he had something else up his sleeve. The two made the trek through the gorgeous outdoor Museum of Art in Raleigh. As they passed over the pedestrian bridge, Katya noticed a lock attached to the railing. As she looked closer, she noticed her initials on the lock, and a note saying “Grow old with me, the best is yet to be” *Aww!!!* Finally catching on to what was happening, Katya turned around to find Garrett already on one knee.
On October 1st, 2016, the two were married at the Renaissance Hotel in Charlotte. Katya wore an absolutely stunning strapless gown by Paloma Blanca. She chose a gorgeous cathedral length lace veil to compliment the shape of the dress. We had a great time dressing the mother of the groom as well. For the first dance, one of the couple’s friends sang “Kiss Me” by Six Pence None the Richer live. This was a big surprise for Garrett. Katya stated that her favorite aspect of the big day was not only the love she felt from her groom, but from all the friends and family that helped them celebrate.
Nowadays in married life, Garrett and Katya enjoy staying home with dinner, a movie, and Buncha-Crunch (yum). If they feel like going out on the town, the couple enjoys Broadway style theatrical productions. As far as advice for brides to be, Katya says try not to focus too much on making everything perfect. If you are truly happy with the person you are marrying, everything will fall into place and the little things will not matter at the end of the day. Garrett says the biggest advice for grooms is to get involved! It is your day too!
These Tarheels have flown the coop and moved down to Dallas, Texas where they now enjoy married life. Katya and Garrett, thank you so much for letting us share your story! We wish ya’ll the best!
